Getting an Accurate Concrete Cutting Estimate

The more the cutter knows about the concrete and the site, the fewer surprises show up on the day of the job.

Getting an Accurate Concrete Cutting Estimate

A free estimate is only as good as the information behind it. A cutter can't scope what they can't picture, and a vague call usually leads to a vague answer or a revised one after the crew shows up. These are the details that get an accurate estimate on the first pass.

What's being cut

Start with the basics: what is it, and what are you trying to end up with? A doorway through a wall, a round hole for a drain, a patio to remove, a slab to divide with straight joints, a pier to take down. The method follows the answer. Osborn Concrete Cutting's work includes core drilling, slab sawing, wall sawing, wire sawing and demolition, so naming the result you want helps the right equipment get matched to the job.

Give dimensions where you have them: the length and width of openings, the number and diameter of holes, the total area of a slab or patio. A quick sketch with measurements beats a long description.

Thickness and reinforcement

Thickness is one of the biggest drivers of how a cut gets done. Osborn's riding saws cut concrete up to 30 inches thick, and cores run up to 42 inches across and 50 feet deep, so the range is wide, but the equipment for a thin residential slab isn't the equipment for a very thick one. If you can measure at an exposed edge, do it. If you can't, say so, and a cutter will want to check on site.

Reinforcement matters just as much. Rebar, wire mesh, post-tension cables and embedded conduit change the tools, the blade wear and the safety plan. Old drawings often show what's inside. If you don't have them, say that, because the cutter may recommend checking before cutting. Osborn says it can test to make sure your concrete structure is safe to work on.

Inside, outside and access

Where the work happens changes the job. Inside a building, the crew has to deal with doors, stairs, elevators, floor loads, occupied areas and finished surfaces. Outside, it's gates, soft ground, slopes and overhead lines. Tell the cutter how equipment gets to the cut, and whether it has to be small enough to fit through a door. Osborn runs push saws for smaller slabs, and its track saws get into small spaces.

Also say what's above, below and behind the cut: another floor, a ceiling, occupied rooms, buried utilities. Cuts go through, and what's on the other side matters.

Water, slurry and timing

Wet cutting is standard for much of this work, so the estimate should account for water. Is there a hose bib or tank nearby? Where can slurry go: a floor drain, a containment area, a vacuum? Some sites have their own rules about runoff, and the owner or general contractor knows them best. Don't guess; ask your site manager before the call.

Timing deserves a mention too. Say when you need the work done, whether it has to happen around other trades, and whether the cut is holding up something else. Osborn works Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM, so raise it early if your schedule needs anything outside that. Mention site safety requirements as well. Osborn lists ISNetworld and TVTC among its safety organizations, so if your site requires proof of either, ask up front.

A short checklist for the call

  • What's being cut and the result you want
  • Dimensions, quantities and hole diameters
  • Thickness, if you can measure it, and any drawings
  • Known rebar, mesh, cables or embedded conduit
  • Inside or outside, and how equipment gets to the work
  • What's above, below and behind the cut
  • Water source and where slurry can go
  • Your target date and any site safety requirements
  • A few photos of the area

Photos help more than people expect. A few pictures of the area, with something in frame for scale, and a sketch of the layout can answer questions before anyone drives out. The estimate can then be firmed up on a site visit when the situation calls for it.
